Back before Winter set in, fishpond sent me one of their brand new Flint Hills Lumbar Packs to try out and review here on the site. Of course, I was stoked and happily set out to put it through it’s paces.
I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived to find that it was not as big as I thought it would be, yet it seemed to be a fairly roomy little pack for a day on the river. Let’s get to my review of the fishpond Flint Hills Lumbar Pack.

Fit & Function
Let me start by saying that I have never used any type of chest/hip/lumbar pack when fishing before. I’ve always carried an Ogio backpack and never thought I would ever change that. I love backpacking it, but when fishpond sent the lumbar pack, I decided to give it a try and give it an honest review.
I can say this, this lumbar pack is actually quite nice. It’s comfortable, stays out of the way and is just big enough to carry the essentials without being a burden. The pack officially measures in at 9″ x 7″ x 2.75″, so I would say it is actually on the small side compared to other packs out there. But small is good and this pack excels at being small while providing ample room.
This pack is made well, stitched well and extremely lightweight. It’s made of breathable Poplan fabric and has external webbing and cords for attaching gear. It also comes with a secondary strap attachment to make this into a chest pack, or you can simply buckle it up as a hip pack, your choice.
As a chest pack, I didn’t like the feel of it at all. It always felt too tight and it seemed to restrict overall movement when used as a chest pack. It spent 90% of it’s water life slid around on my back. Any other way felt kinda awkward to me.
Space For The Gear
For being a small pack, you can actually get quite bit of stuff in it. The inside is a large compartment split in half with organization pockets. On the outside, is a zippered accessory pocket then the outer webbing which also acts as pockets for your gear.
I wouldn’t recommend this pack for a weekend type deal, but a day trip out, it does the job. The outer loops were perfect for attaching my net as well.
- Medium Fly Box
- Regular scissors
- Forceps & Nippers
- Gink
- 4 rolls of tippet
- 4 spare RIO leaders in the pack
- A Flip cam & Flip tripod
The Final Verdict
The fishpond Flint Hills Lumbar Pack is certainly nice little pack to have out on the river. It’s small, lightweight and at just $49.95 retail, it’s a nice buy if you’re looking for a good hip pack for the day out on the river, as I’m sure it can be found for a great price.
For me, it won’t be replacing the backpack. I’m too used to my backpack at this point and not sure I’ll ever really give that up. With that said, I could totally see me using this lumbar pack if something mysterious ever happened to the backpack!
So, if you’re looking for cool little pack for the river, give the Flint Hills Lumbar Pack a try as I think you’ll be pleased with it. Big Thanks for fishpond for sending it to me to review!

I have a bigger version called the ”Waterdance Guide pack” and is bigger than the one you reviewed and I must say I personally think it is the best pack since sliced bread. Try one of those and you may change your mind about your backpack.
